This piece has a very striking style - love the pen and ink style against all of the red!

Genetically Enhanced Hedgehogs Version 3 by Beloved Doll
Beloved Doll

If this trance is not the artist`s original work or violates any of the policies, report it immediately. (See Tools below to report.)

I would first like to say that yes, this is version 3 of this series. Version 1 and 2 will most likely never see an audience, so don`t bother trying to find them. This was at first going to be something I`d keep to myself, working on it for my own amusement. But after a couple of runs at two different takes on the same idea, I decided I would make a real run on the idea. So there isn`t very much of either version 1 or 2 that is the same here (in short, version 1 and 2 are nearly nothing like version 3 far as plot goes or style of writing).

I am going to be using this series as an experiment. I would like to try a couple of things actually. First experiment, would be telling a story with using much dialogue. The reason for this is that I`m fascinated by movies that use little dialogue and yet they can still bring on a story and the viewer understands what is going on. I`d like to try my hand at this and if I can do the same.

The second experiment kind of goes hand in hand with the first. Because of the lack of dialogue (or at least not as much of it as what is normal in stories), I would like to see if I`m successful at conveying messages to the readers even though the dialogue is lacking. The muted characters will be 'speaking' with their body language and minimal sound (such as hissing). Normally in my stories, if you have read any in the past, what the character doesn`t say is usually explained. But this time I won`t be doing that. If you would like to participate in this second experiment, then what I`d like for you to do is tell me what you think the message is the characters are giving one another. If the right messages are being picked up by the readers, then I`d know that I`m on the right track. You can send your views on what the messages are via any method you prefer, whether it`s commenting on the actual site this story is posted on (which is preferred), or private message, or e-mail or IM. Whatever suits you.

Third experiment, the least important one and probably doesn`t mean much to anyone, but I`m going to do it just to see if I can. This one I call the songfic experiment. For those who don`t know, it`s a scene that takes place that is meant to run with a song in particular (like a music video), where the reader would have the song play and read what the writer has put down, using their imagination to put the two together. Luckily for you, this probably won`t happen very often. But to know which chapters are dedicated to this experiment, look at the titles of each chapter. The title would be the name of a song (whether it`s from Sonic or another source). The song title (chapter title) would be the song the scene is meant to run with. To properly create these, and do them well, I would describe the scene in enough detail where it would carry the same as the song. Playing the song with the chapter (it helps if you have the same version as I do, which details of it will be given at the beginning of the chapter) while you read would help in bringing the two together and would also help you see what the speed of the reading should be. This, of course, is totally optional - you don`t have to do it in this manner at all. As I said, this third experiment doesn`t really mean much and is just "for the heck of it."

I`ve done my best to incorporate real hedgehog behaviour - I have worked with hedgehogs for years and know them quite well. But keep in mind that since this is about the Sonic characters and it`s fictional, that they still aren`t going to be 100% normal hedgehog in behaviour. They are just going to have more real hedgehog behaviour than what they do in the franchise.

I will no longer detain you from the story. I will leave you to it with these final words: any questions? Just ask! And yes, this does have to with the Sonic crew. This chapter is just an intro chapter to set everything up for your understanding of what`s to happen in the future chapters.
===============
Genetically enhanced hedgehogs, or GE hedgehogs, are fascinating. They look similar anthro-ized hedgehogs. If they were to stand upright, they would reach to the waist of a human adult. They still have quills and work just like normal hedgehog quills but with the enhancements. Also like normal hedgehogs, GE hedgehogs have been known to show interest in digging and climbing. Their life span is to be expected as long as a human being`s (about 80 years or so). Thus, if one acquired a GE Hedgehog for a pet, it is a lifetime commitment. They are mostly nocturnal like normal hedgehogs as their eye sight works best in the dark. But this is not to say that they are blind during the day. Bright lights just hurt their already sensitive eyes. They can also roll up into tight, spiky balls like normal hedgehogs.

The males are usually bigger than the females, noticeably so in fact. But age also must be considered; if a female is age 14 and a male is age 5, the female would be bigger obviously. There are more differences between the genders besides overall size. The quills on the female tend to be smaller and softer than the male`s. This shows that while the female will be more defensive with her quills, like normal hedgehogs, the male will use his quills for fighting. Because males are meant to do the fighting, their bodies are thicker (or bigger) than the females all over; most notably at the neck, shoulders and front legs and paws. The males also tend to have larger noses than the females.

These genetically enhanced hedgehogs also make normal hedgehog hissing sounds but can also growl, similar to wolves and dogs. While they seems to be mostly unable to communicate back with humans verbally due to their limited language, they seem to have great understanding of what is being said to them by humans. They also have their own form of communication they use with one another. A lot of it is via body language but they also seem to have another sort of communication with one another. Humans can`t understand their language fully, however. There is much yet to be discovered with their language.

Like most animals, they are considered to be an adult at an earlier age than humans. 13 years is the age that GE hedgehogs are considered mature and old enough to breed. Most will wait a while longer before they bear young, however. With this slow moving method or reproducing, GE hedgehogs don`t increase in numbers quickly at all. When they do bear young, the average litter size is 1-3, more does happen though rare.

GE hedgehogs are considered to be pack animals but their social system is more complicated than that. Many have been seen living in "packs" (though many different names are used when describing a group of GE hedgehogs). In packs, they do have a system where there is an alpha male and female and other ranks. There have also been some who are loners or just have their mate and that`s it except for perhaps their child. So there is really a variety in whether or not they truly are pack animals. But it has been known that once they have formed a bond with another, and they are separated, most (not all) do not take to the separation well. But if they do live in "packs", there are variances here as well. Some groups will be tight with one another and will always be seen together. Other groups have their members spread out and separate from one another, but they do re-join later on for activities such as sleeping or defending territory. There are quite many different answers to how a GE hedgehog may live socially. It`s difficult to say whether or not as a whole that they live in groups or alone.

GE hedgehogs have a wide variety of taste, as much as humans. They do eat bugs and small mammals like mice as normal hedgehogs do. But they also enjoy fruits, vegetables, eggs, meat and many human foods. Most of them are usually not picky when it comes to food.

Out in Emerald Hill, GE hedgehogs are somewhat common in the area. Emerald Hill is an ideal territory for the GE hedgehogs. The temperature is just right. There is a good balance of night and day hours. Plenty of trees and other natural landscaping to provide shelter. The water is plentiful and clean. There is also an abundance of food.

Their numbers in the wild are dropping, however. On occassion, a group of people will come and capture a few of the GE hedgehogs and will take them away to other places to be sold to either the rich folk, zoos, or scientists who are looking to do research on the creatures. It seems that if this routine continues, GE hedgehogs will be one of the creatures that are in captivity only. The ones that are captured and sold to other humans, or that are bred in captivity, are usually tagged. The most common method is using both microchipping and a collar with tags. It is required by law that any GE hedgehogs that are in captivity are to be tagged in some way and are to not be released back into the wild or be allowed to mix with the wild ones. But of course, humans don`t always follow the laws so these rules are sometimes broken.

While GE hedgehogs usually only have each other to worry about far as danger goes, they also have to be concerned of the humans that intend to capture them. To make matters worse, Eggman, or Ivo Robotnik, has unleashed his robots in many places which pose a threat to everyone and everything. Things have quickly become dangerous for them. Because of this added danger, any GE Hedgehog that is loose has to be on their toes even more so than before (not to say that living in the wild is totally safe or anything). But this doesn`t mean that Eggman plans on going after just GE Hedgehogs. He just wants world domination and be in control of everyone and everything. GE Hedgehogs just happen to be one of the creatures that are under his threat.

Back on to the GE Hedgehogs themselves...

Because of how different they are from most animals, they attract attention from humans for one reason or another. To some people it`s how they look. To others, it`s how they act. Whatever the reason for the attraction, everyone can agree that GE hedgehogs are definitely special creatures.

Their history holds that some odd years ago, the first GE Hedgehogs were created through science (as what their name would suggest). The reason for it is unknown or just locked away to be kept a secret. But it is known that they have many benefits. The news broke out into the public of their creation and what they are capable of doing. The public fell in love with them and thus the demand for them began. After some years of that, the GE Hedgehogs began to breed, science was no longer needed to create more of these creatures. By the time the present comes around, creating GE Hedgehogs is a rare occurance even though their numbers are relatively low. In fact, it`s so rare to create a GE hedgehog these days that it is almost considered science fiction by today`s standards.

The long break of time since the last GE hedgehog that was created is about to be broken...
