Oddities: Sonic OVA/Sonic the Movie
|
|
Sonic OVA (or Sonic the Movie in the US) has been out for some time, but as someone who has watched it over 300 times at the time of this article being written up, I`ve noticed some things about it that doesn`t seem to be all that well-known about the anime. So I`ve compiled this together to put all oddities about it under one place to be shared. Maybe you might come across something that you hadn`t noticed before. The dates are when certain sections are added, not when these things were noticed. Time listed is the time on the DVD and are all approximate (I do the best I can to get them exact but I can`t guarentee their exact accuracy).
May 5 2009
- Sonic getting ready to spin into Black Eggman from above. (23:04)
Just before he rolls into that spiky ball, look at his legs. They are not blue! Instead they are the peachy colour that his arms are.
- Sonic realizing what Metal is doing to South Island.
The sequence where Sonic awakes in the forest and sees a vision of MetalSonic (you see MetalSonic blasting towards the screen) and Sonic turns and says "I`ve got to stop Metal!" (35:05-35:09) This animation of MetalSonic used for this sequence is the same animation used later on, where MetalSonic is standing between Sonic and the about-to-explode President`s rocket and he comes flying at attack for another round of their extensive fight(47:34-47:37). In both sequences, MetalSonic is banged up even though in the first showing of it he is in perfect condition in the surrounding scenes. My suspiscion is that it`s an animator shortcut (which is common and many scenes are similar to using the same sequence for different areas of the anime) rather than having to make two different animated sequences of the same character doing the same thing in two different conditions. The odd thing is that he`s banged up during a time when he actually isn`t.
- Robots declaring that they thought Eggman would do something so underhanded.
Eggman jumps from the desk to the floor at the President`s office (with Sonic and Tails still standing on the desk). Eggman spreads his arms and asks "Do you think I would do something so underhanded?" When this scene is described in translations (back before the official release in the US) and even still today, most people say the robots say "We do!" Well, the translation is right, but what`s the oddity here? Everyone forgets that Sonic and Tails say it as well! Watch it again and look to see Sonic and Tails` mouths move as they recite the line with the surrounding robots.
- The tortoise rocket of Eggman`s toroise and hare rockets.
So we see when he first launches them, the tortoise is clearly a tortoise (a "turtle" that lives on land). But later on towards the end, when it returns to the scene and it catches the disc in it`s mouth, it has changed into a turtle (a turtle that lives in water)! How can you tell? Look at the front legs of this rocket in both areas and compare them. The beginning they are actual legs, in the end they are flippers. A rocket that can change species!
